Roof pitch, and what changes as it gets steeper
Pitch is the single geometric fact that changes most about a roof: what can be installed on it, how fast water leaves it, how much material it takes, and whether a crew can stand on it.
How pitch is stated
Rise over run, where the run is always twelve inches. A 4:12 roof rises four inches per foot of horizontal distance; a 12:12 roof rises twelve, which is a 45-degree angle. Roofers say "four twelve" and "twelve twelve". It is not a percentage and it is not degrees, and the twelve is fixed by convention so that the first number is the whole story.
What changes as it climbs

The practical threshold in this trade is roughly 7:12. Below it a roofer walks; above it a roofer is held on. That is the step where the same square of roof takes meaningfully longer, which is why pitch appears in what drives roof cost near the top of the list.
Why low slope is a different problem
A shingle roof is not waterproof. It is a series of overlapping shedding layers that rely on water moving downhill quickly enough not to work sideways under a course. Reduce the slope and the water slows, wind-driven rain gets further under the laps, and snow and debris sit rather than clear. Below about 2:12 no amount of care makes overlapping shingles the right answer, which is why the porch roof or the back addition on so many houses here is the section that keeps leaking.
The fix is a system with sealed seams rather than laps — a single-ply membrane or modified bitumen — and the joint between it and the shingle roof above is the detail that decides whether it works.
Pitch in this housing stock
- Pre-1940 city neighborhoods — Hyde Park, Mt. Adams, Clifton, Columbia-Tusculum, Covington and Newport. Steep, often 9:12 and above, with dormers, turrets and complicated valley work. Frequently built for slate.
- Post-war ranches and capes — Norwood, Delhi, Green Township, Erlanger, Fort Mitchell. Typically 4:12 to 6:12, simple planes, straightforward roofs.
- 1990s and 2000s subdivisions — Mason, West Chester, Liberty Township, Union, Independence. Usually 6:12 to 8:12 with multiple planes, front-facing gables and a lot of intersections.
- Porches, additions and dormer roofs, on every era. These are where the low-slope sections hide, and they are disproportionately where the leaks are.
How to find yours
From the attic, with a level and a tape
Hold a level against the underside of a rafter, mark twelve inches along it from where it touches, and measure straight up from that mark to the rafter. That measurement is the rise. It is the safest method and it is accurate.
From the gable end, from the ground
On a visible gable you can measure the rise and run of the triangle from outside and divide down to a twelve-inch run. Good enough to know which band you are in.
By eye, against the drawing above
Comparing your roof line to the gauge in Fig. 1 will reliably tell you whether you are in the walkable band or the staging band, which is usually the question that matters.
Note every plane separately
Houses here often have a main roof, a porch, a dormer and an addition, all at different pitches. The lowest one usually governs what the roof needs.
What pitch changes about the quote
- Area. A steeper roof is more material over the same footprint — see roofing squares.
- Labor. Staging, harnesses, roof jacks, slower movement and more careful material handling.
- Underlayment requirements. Low-slope shingle installations need doubled or membrane underlayment to stay within manufacturer specification.
- Waste. Steeper roofs tend to generate a little more of it.
- Access and cleanup. Material comes off a steep roof under control rather than simply sliding into a container.

It sheds water and snow faster and tends to last longer for that reason, and it costs more to work on for the same reason. Neither is a decision you get to make on an existing house — pitch is framing.
Can shingles go on a 2:12 roof?
Most manufacturers permit it down to 2:12 with a doubled underlayment or a full membrane beneath, and below that nothing permits it. Even at 2:12 or 3:12, a membrane is often the better answer here, because our wind-driven rain is exactly the condition that defeats a shallow lap.
Why does my roof have three different pitches?
Additions, porches and dormers get framed to suit their own spans and to fit under existing rooflines. It is completely normal, and the important part is that each section is roofed with something appropriate to its own pitch rather than everything getting shingles because most of the roof has them.
Does pitch affect gutter sizing?
It does. A steep plane delivers water into the gutter faster than a shallow one of the same area, so velocity as well as volume decides whether the trough copes — see gutters.
