What hail damage looks like, and what it is usually confused with
Hail damage is a specific thing with a specific appearance, and three other conditions get mistaken for it constantly. Two of those are age, one is a manufacturing characteristic, and none of them is a storm loss.
What hail actually does to an asphalt shingle
A hailstone hitting a shingle does two things at once: it knocks granules off, and it bruises the mat underneath. The bruise is the important part. Press a thumb on it and it feels soft, like the give in a bruised apple, because the reinforcing mat has fractured beneath an intact surface. That fracture is what shortens the life of the shingle — the exposed asphalt now degrades where it is no longer protected.
The pattern is random. Hail does not respect courses or edges: it hits where it hits, across slopes, and it hits the soft metals too. Which is why the fastest way to confirm hail is not the roof at all.
Look at the soft metal first. Gutters, downspouts, vent hoods, the roof of an air conditioning unit, a mailbox, a grill lid. Hail dents them, and those dents are far easier to read than a bruise on a shingle. A slope with claimed hail damage and no dents anywhere on the soft metal is worth a second look.
The three things it gets confused with
- Blistering
- Small round craters where a gas bubble in the asphalt broke open. They look remarkably like hail hits, and the giveaways are that the edges are sharp rather than soft, there is no bruise underneath, they are spread evenly over all slopes including ones hail could not reach, and there is no matching damage on the soft metals. This is a manufacturing and heat characteristic, made worse by a hot unventilated attic.
- Granule loss from age
- Follows the path water takes: heaviest below valleys, under the drip line of an upper roof, and along the flow lines down the slope. Age is patterned; hail is random. Ages tell you the roof is old, not that anything happened to it.
- Mechanical damage
- Scuffs and scrapes from foot traffic, ladders, or a satellite dish installation. Concentrated on the access route and around whatever was worked on, which is a pattern nothing meteorological produces.
Size matters, and so does the wind behind it
One inch is the conventional threshold at which hail starts doing real damage to an asphalt shingle mat, and it is not a hard line. Small hail driven by a strong wind hits harder than the same stone falling still, an older brittle shingle bruises at a size that would bounce off a new one, and a slope facing into the storm takes more than the one behind the ridge.

How hail damage is documented properly
Establish the date first
Not the day the stain appeared. The day of the event, matched against what NOAA recorded near the address. Everything in a claim hangs off the date of loss.
Chalk a test square
The standard method is a marked square on each slope, with the hits inside it counted. It converts "there is hail damage" into a number an adjuster can verify.
Photograph the soft metals
Dents on a gutter, a vent hood or an air conditioning fin are corroborating evidence that a shingle bruise on its own is not.

North, south, east and west, separately. Directional damage is expected and it strengthens the account of what happened.
Note what is not damaged
An honest report says which slopes are clean. A report that finds damage on every surface of every elevation invites scrutiny of all of it.
Nothing here predicts what your insurer will decide. Documenting damage accurately is the part you control; coverage is determined by your policy and your adjuster. Presenting age-related granule loss as hail damage is misrepresentation, and it undermines the parts of a claim that are genuine.
The awkward local truth
Hail gets the attention because it is dramatic and because it drives the storm-chasing sales industry. In this metro it is the less common problem by a factor of more than five. If someone knocks on your door after a storm and leads with hail, ask which recorded event they mean and check the date. The events that damage roofs here most often are wind days, and wind damage looks completely different — creased shingles along a course, unsealed tabs and missing ridge cap.

Yes, routinely. Bruising is a texture, not a hole, and it is very hard to see from below even when it is extensive. That is the honest reason a roof gets inspected up close after a significant hail event, and it is also the excuse used by people selling unnecessary work, which is why documentation with photographs matters more than an opinion.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
Most Ohio and Kentucky policies require a loss to be reported within twelve months of the date it occurred. Check your own policy for the requirement that applies to you, and see how to file a roof claim for the sequence.
Does hail damage always mean a full roof replacement?
No. The scope depends on how widespread the bruising is and on whether the damaged material can be integrated with what remains. A handful of hits on one slope is a different question from consistent bruising across every elevation.
Are impact-rated shingles worth it here?
They are genuinely more resistant to bruising, and some carriers offer a premium credit for them. In a market that records five times as many damaging-wind events as hail events, though, wind detailing at the edges buys more roof than an impact rating does.
